Costa, Starbucks, Waitrose, Tesco, Pret and Greggs are just some of the food outlets we have judged in our mission to find the best festive sandwich on the shelves

The countdown to Christmas is on, which can mean only one thing – an abundance of festive sandwiches hitting the shelves.
But with so many to choose from, how will you know which one is the best?
Here, we test this year’s top meat, veggie and vegan sarnies and rate them out 10 for both taste and festive factor
Waitrose Smoked Salmon, Egg and Truffle, £3.80
With free range egg mayo, Scottish smoked salmon, mushroom and truffle sauce and spinach on rye bread, this sandwich is a fancy twist on festive food.
It feels like a nice ‘light’ option, when compared to the others.

Coast Turkey Feast, £3.75

This festive sarnie – filled with smoked streaky bacon, pork, sage and onion stuffing and cranberry sauce on malted bread – packs a real punch.
It has just the right amount of sweetness and a good amount of cranberry sauce. However, it is more expensive than its supermarket counterparts.

Tesco Turkey and Trimmings, £2.80

If ever a sandwich screamed Christmas, this would be it. It comes with sausage, bacon, sage and onion stuffing and cranberry sauce and although the sausage sets it apart from the others, the meat is bland, and it’s a bit dry overall.
A great meal deal option, though.

Greggs – Pigs Under Blankets Baguette, from £3.20

Described as “a tasty baguette with all the trimmings” this sarnie – with sausage, bacon, stuffing and a sweet port and cranberry sauce, is served hot.
To be honest, it wasn’t the most appetizing to look at and it tasted more like a normal breakfast baguette.

Marks & Spencer Turkey Feast, £3.30

One of my favorites out of all the homage-to-turkey sandwiches.
There’s a big British emphasis on this M&S one, which contains British turkey breast with pork, sage and onion stuffing, an onion mayonnaise, cranberry chutney and British bacon.

Morrisons Christmas Lunch, £2.50

The classic. A turkey sandwich with cranberry chutney, bacon, stuffing and mayo on malted bread.
It could have done with a bit more sauce, but there’s a large amount of meat and 5% from all sales are being donated to Young Lives vs Cancer too.

Subway Tiger Pig, from £3.99

For a six-inch sub ‘Tis the season for Pigs in Blankets and Subway’s version is a giant pork sausage wrapped in maple-cured bacon, topped with all the trimmings you desire.
It’s not overly festive though I ordered a foot-long by mistake, which it was really expensive at £8.89. Ouch.

Starbucks Blitzen’s Blue Cheese & Chutney Toastie, from £2.99

This is, in my mind, the ultimate tribute to the Christmas cheeseboard. Deliciously rich, the sarnie is packed with four cheeses such as Stilton, mozzarella, Cheddar and Emmental.
Not only is this a fab hot option, but I reckon it would be a great post-Christmas party hangover cure, too.

Waitrose Vegan No Lobster Marie Rose Roll, £3
(

A vegan Brioche-style roll filled with roasted oyster mushrooms in a ‘Marie Rose’ sauce with cucumber and rocket.
I had high expectations for this festive sarnie as it sounded exciting but I was left disappointed.
It was nothing like a lobster roll, but bonus points for trying something new…

Whether you’re vegan or not, this one is incredible. It is packed full of butternut squash, rocket and Christmas pesto made from pine nuts and chestnuts, served with a vegan sage mayo, crispy onions and caramelised pecans.
If all vegan food is this good, sign me up.
