Tucked away in a quiet corner of Bath, away from the hustle and bustle of the centre, lies one of the city’s best-kept secrets.
Rooted Cafe and Supper Rooms on Newbridge Road is an independent and family-run restaurant offering forward-thinking vegetarian and vegan dishes. And if you think vegetarian food is boring – think again.
From bubble and squeak to traditional Indian railway curries, Rooted’s menu is both bewildering and exciting. There’s something for everyone and all dishes have an ethnic twist.

Its breakfast menu is particularly varied – you can order dishes such as a traditional English breakfast, raspberry and rhubarb pancakes, eggs on toast, or the full Indian breakfast – which is available all day and something of a specialty.
The full Indian breakfast includes grilled paratha, dhal tempered with freshly fried onions, green chilli and black mustard seeds, two fried eggs, mango lime achar, coconut yogurt and patcha chutney. All this amazing food comes served with a mango lassi or a Joe Chai latte.
We arrived at lunchtime so we missed out on the amazing breakfast options – but the lunch offerings were just as tempting. Wraps, salads, burgers and of course the amazing railway curry were all options that appealed to us. But what really stood out were the side dishes.
I visited Canada in late 2019 and fell in love with poutine, so much so that I basically lived off it for an entire two weeks. So when I saw there were not one but two poutine dishes on offer, I became very excited.
The Indian poutine comes with skin-on fries, melted cheddar cheese, dhal and mango masala mayo. There’s also the option to go for vegan cheese if that’s your preference.
The wild mushroom poutine is served with wild mushroom gravy and a choice of truffle mayo or siracha mayo (or both). This is the one we plumped for.
We also ordered some halloumi fries from the side menu, as well as a falafel wrap and fries, a couple of burgers and fries, and some Quorn nuggets and chips for my one-year-old. He was thrilled when the waitress brought over some crayons for him to color with. In fact, all the staff were brilliant with him and he could not have been more helpful.
We weren’t kept waiting long for our meals and while we waited we enjoyed some cappuccinos and mango lassis. I may have had a large glass of wine-or two, while my little boy cracked on with his coloring of it.
The cafe itself is really relaxed and friendly. It’s not the kind of place I would ever worry about bringing a baby, and it was dog friendly too – which is always nice.
When our meals did arrive there was a collective gasp from our table. The portions were huge and everything looked incredible. We couldn’t wait to get stuck in.
My meat-free cheeseburger was really nice – a good-sized patty with a distinctive smokey flavour. It did actually taste like the real thing and came with a very healthy portion of chips and some delicious homemade coleslaw.
My stepdaughter was raving about her massive wrap, and my husband and stepson simply felt in quiet contentment as they inhaled their burgers. But the real highlight was the side dishes.
The halloumi fries were absolutely delicious and the poutine was so amazing we ordered two helpings of the stuff. We couldn’t get over how tasty it was, it had just the right amount of cheese, gravy and truffle mayo and was incredibly moreish. Instantly I was back in Vancouver.
Trust me, if you’ve never had poutine before – you need to try it. It’s a delicious concoction of fries, gravy and cheese and is one of the most quintessential Canadian dishes.
What really made this poutine different was the mushroom flavor throughout. The gravy and truffle mayo went perfectly together and the result was heavenly.
As well as its incredible menu, Rooted also holds a monthly supper club evening, where the restaurant provides a one-off menu inspired by multicultural Britain. Four courses are priced at £35 and include a range of experimental seasonal dishes.
It would be an ideal way to try the best of what this unique restaurant has to offer, as well as an exceptional place to enjoy a date night.
